Winter Streetwear 2026: How to Layer for Indian Winters

Winter in India varies a lot. A Chennai December barely needs a layer, while a Delhi January needs real warmth. This guide shows how to build streetwear outfits that work in both, using a few pieces you can mix and match.

1. The key pieces

A hoodie or sweatshirt

This is the base of most winter streetwear outfits. A 300 GSM piece suits mild winters and cool evenings, while 400 to 440 GSM is for proper cold. Our GSM guide explains the difference, and hoodie vs sweatshirt helps you choose between them.

A heavyweight tee

A 240 GSM oversized tee works as a base layer under an open hoodie, overshirt or jacket.

An outer layer

For colder cities, add a jacket on top: denim, bomber, utility or a padded jacket.

Relaxed bottoms

Straight jeans, cargos or joggers balance roomy tops better than skinny fits.

Sneakers

Clean low-tops for a minimal look, or chunkier pairs to balance more volume on top.

2. How to layer

  1. Base: a heavyweight tee.
  2. Mid layer: a hoodie or crewneck sweatshirt.
  3. Outer layer (cold cities only): an open jacket over the hoodie.

In milder cities, stop at two layers: a tee with an open zip hoodie is often enough.

3. Outfit ideas

  • Mild winter: oversized tee, open zip hoodie, straight jeans, white sneakers.
  • Cold evening: 300 GSM hoodie, cargos, chunky sneakers.
  • Proper cold: 440 GSM oversized hoodie under a utility jacket, relaxed jeans, beanie.
  • Travel day: crewneck sweatshirt, joggers, comfortable sneakers.

4. Colours

Black, charcoal, navy and olive are the easiest base colours in winter. Add one muted accent, like a maroon hoodie under an olive jacket. Keep prints to one piece per outfit so the look stays clean.

5. Care through the season

Wash fleece inside out in cold water and dry on low. High heat is the main reason hoodies lose their softness and shape.
