Winter Hoodies for Men in India: How to Pick the Right Weight, Fit and Style
Winter in India isn't one season. A Delhi January and a Bengaluru December need very different hoodies. Here's how to pick one that suits where you live and how you'll wear it, without overpaying for weight you don't need.
1. Start with fabric weight (GSM)
GSM, or grams per square metre, tells you how thick and warm a hoodie will be. It matters more than almost anything else for winter wear.
| Your winter | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Mild (much of South and West India) | About 300 GSM | Warm for evenings and AC, not bulky |
| Cold mornings and nights | 300–400 GSM | Good balance of warmth and comfort |
| Proper winter (North India, hills) | 400 GSM and above | Thick, dense and genuinely warm |
For a deeper explanation of what each weight feels like, read our GSM guide.
2. Choose your fit: oversized or regular
- Oversized hoodies have dropped shoulders and a roomy cut. They give the relaxed streetwear look and leave room to layer a tee underneath. Heavier fabric suits this fit because it holds its shape.
- Regular fit hoodies sit closer to the body with ribbed cuffs and hem. They look neater and are easier to wear under a jacket.
With an oversized hoodie, pick your usual size. Sizing up on a piece that's already cut roomy can make it look sloppy.
3. Pullover or zip-up?
- Pullover: the classic look, slightly warmer because there's no opening at the front.
- Zip-up: easier to adjust as the temperature changes during the day, and works like a light jacket over a tee.
4. Hoodie or sweatshirt?
A hoodie is warmer because the hood covers your neck and head. A crewneck sweatshirt looks a little smarter and layers neatly under jackets or over a shirt collar. If you're torn, see hoodie vs sweatshirt.
5. Check the details that make it last
- Brushed fleece inside for softness and warmth.
- Ribbed cuffs and hem that hold their shape and keep the cold out.
- Double-stitched seams, which handle repeated washing better.
- A clear size chart with actual garment measurements.
How to style a winter hoodie
- Everyday: hoodie, straight jeans and clean sneakers.
- Layered: an oversized tee under an open zip hoodie, or a hoodie under a denim or utility jacket.
- Travel: a regular-fit hoodie with joggers, warm on cold flights and early trains.
- Colours: black, navy, olive and grey go with almost everything and hide wear well.

How to care for a hoodie
Wash inside out in cold water, tumble dry low, and iron inside out if needed. Heat is the main reason fleece loses its softness and shape. For the full routine, including pilling and drying, read how to wash a hoodie so it stays soft.
